As in any sport, there are strategies that can be used to enable even mediocre players to beat the more skilled ones and Cornhole is no different. While all games that require any level of physical prowess require practice, Cornhole only requires you to find a way to toss your bag so that it either lands in the hole or slides into it and then throw the bag consistently the same way.
You must learn to throw the bag so that it lands with the best opportunity to go into the hole. By using the slide method, you are aiming at a much larger target than when you aim for a six-inch hole that is about 30 feet away. If you fail to slide the bag into the hole, you can still score a point for leaving it on the platform.

Aggressive players will aim for the hole, which is a six-inch diameter target on the top of the platform. Others will use the entire board, providing them a much larger target, and use a lower arc on their toss to allow the bag to slide into the hole. This strategy not only provides a better chance of hitting the target, it also provides the opportunity to block the hole from your opponent, forcing them to aim for the smaller target.
Your form and fan gear will be important, as will your method of tossing the bag, but with this game strength is not that important. Being able to land your bag on the platform can still give you a point at the end of the inning, and if it slides into the hole it’s three times better.
A strategy that is common among many competitive endeavors is knowing your opponent. You have probably heard a winner proclaim that they had their opponent’s number, and in Cornhole having your opponent’s number can be beneficial. Only in most Cornhole competitions knowing your opponent’s number is knowing the number of alcoholic beverages it takes to throw them off their game. Well, yeah you have to know your own number, but when you know the opponent’s number it’s easier to know when you can expect to start doing better than them.
